Tolbert Christmas Party

Each year we have a big Tolbert Family Christmas party and Santa comes. This is was a fun year because Finley is somewhat understanding the idea of Santa. She knows he lives at the North Pole, he makes toys, and you have to be happy, helpful, and good, for him to bring you presents. We are also teaching her it's about giving and helping others. She was a big girl and when he asked her what she wanted she told him 'A Pin
k Camera that Works.' Well this particular Santa didn't bring that so we'll have to see if he does in 4 days. But don't fret, when she opened the present from him she asked us 'Where's a Pink Camera?' That child doesn't forget anything. She did however love the present he brought her. It is a fun little cleaning kit, and since she is my daug
hter, she came home and started 'cleaning' the house. Another tradition they have is to read the Nativity Story and have all the little kids dress up to match the parts. She was big enough to be a little angel this year. I love the holidays and look forward to the rest of the week!

Paying Off

Every day I pick Fin up from Preschool and ask her what she learned. The usual response is, 'Um, I colored pictures.' Well that is great and I'm glad that she's doing something besides watching video's. The little stink, randomly she will start singing songs, quoting sayings, counting to high numbers, saying colors and shapes, and I ask her: 'So Fin? Where did you learn that?' Fin: 'At Preschool.' It's good to see the money is paying for more than just coloring. This would be her randomly reciting the Pledge of Allegiance. (You may have to turn up your volume to hear)

Push Push Pole

What a perfect afternoon! We were able to go cross country skiing as a family. 6K of newly groomed trails, no one else around, sunshine and lots of giggles from Finley. She was so sad when we were done so Brian had to convince her that they would go tomorrow. She just hangs out in the backpack and says 'Faster Papa.' What a great core workout for him! She's also learned to say 'Push, push, pole.' They are quite the pair. Yes even I was able to get out and enjoy the beautiful weather and exercise. This is the one type of skiing my doctor approved of (still have to be careful not to fall). Ok so I know I'm pregnant, but I forgot how much of a full body workout cross country skiing is! I even got a belly shot in for those who keep bugging me. Don't mind that my jacket is a little high on my belly, I was just glad to find an outfit that worked. 6 weeks left and I'm feeling good, done but good.

This Says It All

One of my friends posted this on their blog (kdayracing.com) and it is so good and so true I have to pass it on. Even though we are maybe 3 months (which isn't very long) from the start of cycling season, this says so much about being married to a cyclist. It's a little long but it will put a smile on your face, and if you're married to a cyclist you will agree!

From At the Back, Velo News, May 17, 2005.

“Ladies, are you out there? If you’re the wife, girlfriend or significant other of a cyclist, and you’re wondering why this magazine and the others that look just like it are cluttering up your place, I’m talking to you. It’s not easy, is it? Your life revolves around your man’s need to ride. You thought you were going to have some quality time with him this weekend? Silly girl. Saturday morning doesn’t start with the two of you lazing around in bed together; he’s up and out there at 6 a.m. Between cups of coffee, he’s lubing the chain, cleaning the cassette, putting air in the tires and wiping last weeks drool off the frame. He’s inhaling a big breakfast and watching cycling on OLN. So much for snuggling in what was a warm bed. You ask when he’s going to be home from the ride, and you get the reassuring response. “Oh, we’re going easy today,” he says, Probably just a few hours, I’ll be back by one.” But you both know he’s lying. A well intentioned lie, maybe a white lie, but whatever – it’s not the truth. You will not be shopping together for that new hardwood floor today. The shower leak will not be fixed. You lost, sister. You lost to a bike.

Here’s how it goes for me. They meet at our house, rolling up in ones and twos. They gather on the front porch, some of them a little nervous as they size each other up. And then the “dudes” come out. “Dude, I was out till three in the morning, I’m so tired. We gotta go slow today.” “Dude, I must’ve eaten some bad curry last night, my belly isn’t feeling so good. We gotta take it easy today”. “Dude, I rode like 60 miles yesterday, my legs are worked. Let’s go mellow today.” “Dude, I met the hottest girl last night, and well….”I call it the scroll, this sequential list of excuses. I guess they have to have something to fall back on when they get dropped. What’s that phrase? Shut up and ride? The one over here is posing in his new Italian kit, the one he scored on a recent trip. You can’t get it in the U.S., very slick. The next one’s straddling his brand-new Serrotta Ti, acting like it’s no big deal. That one over there is peacocking in a fresh set of Carnacs. It’s like the Discovery Channel on our front porch, only there are no females out there to impress, just me in the window giggling. After the big show, the last one arrives, takes his licks for being late, and they’re off. “I’ll see you around one and we’ll go look for our new floors. I promise,” he whispers so no one will hear. A peck on the cheek and off he rides. I know better. We’re not going to look at floor today, but I’m still hopeful for a romantic dinner, maybe a little quiet time this evening before bed. One o’clock comes and goes. Two o’clock comes and goes. Around three, he staggers into the house looking like hell. Salt on his helmet straps, smelling nasty and black circles under his eyes. “Hi baby”, he manages. “I’m so blown out. It was an epic ride. We rode to blah blah, and then over to blah blah, and then so-and-so attacked on the climb and then hmm hmm chased him, so I had to chase, too. Then he blew up but I still felt good so I dug deep but what’s-his-name came up from behind and then blah blah blah.” It sounds like Charlie Brown’s teacher, squawk, squawk. It sounds amazingly like … last Saturday’s ride.“I couldn’t just ride home alone ‘cause I didn’t have it in me, so I had to ride back with the group and they wanted to ride back to town the long way. But we can still make it to the floor place. I’ll just take a quick shower.” Slightly miffed, I hear the shower running. I make him a sandwich while I’m waiting and open up a Coke for him. And then I wait. After a while, I go upstairs thinking maybe he slipped in the shower while shaving his legs, and I find him. With his towel wrapped around his waist, he is in bed snoozing, still damp.

Later that night, when we’re out for dinner and drinks, we’re hanging with the “dudes” from this morning again. More talk about the ride, who dropped whom and who flatted and who blew up and who had no legs. I’m about to die. Hey, I ride a bike too, and I’ve ridden all the same roads and hills – they’re not that hard. I have my own Carnacs, what’s the big deal? Apparently, I’m missing something here. My man, sensing my annoyance, lovingly squeezes my hand under the table, and in a whisper assures me that when we get home. It’s all about us. I can’t wait. I light some candles, put on some soft music and slip into something much more comfortable. Before I even get to the room, though, I hear him snoring. And so it goes. A good friend who shall remain nameless is the wife of a pro cyclist. She told me that one time in the middle of a romantic, candlelight dinner she looked across the table to see that her man was chin-to-his-chest, dozing in the middle of the restaurant. His definition of cleaning up the garage, she says, means reorganizing the bike parts.

What can you say ladies? This obsession is a bit of an inconvenience for us. But I have to admit, climbing into bed next to him, I gaze down at his peaceful, sleeping face and smile to myself. I am happy that he has this in his life. I feel his smooth, muscular shaved legs under the sheets. When I wrap my arms around him, I feel his lean body. I see how his stress is reduced when he rides, how he’s happy as a boy when he comes back wanting to tell me everything about his day on the bike. So maybe girls lack the testosterone to understand it the same way. But I know he’s happy, and that makes me happy. Ladies, you just have to find a way to make it work. Before my man got home that day, I went and picked out the floors myself. He’ll like them no matter what. I also met up with my friend (the pro cyclist’s wife), and we each bought a new pair of shoes, courtesy of those missing boys. See that cycling habit’s not so bad.”

Let It Snow!

Well the first real snow of the year is here! We woke up to 6 inches this morning and it's still snowing. The first thing Fin said when she woke up was, 'We need to go build a snowman!' Little kids priorities! So after some hot chocolate and rolls we went out and shoveled the driveway and attempted a snowman. The snow is way too light and fluffy to even make a little snowball. She had fun playing in it, eating it, and feeding it to her papa. We discovered her boots are a little small and she insists that she needs new cute ones. She's such a girl lately that it makes me laugh! After coming inside to warm up she told me, 'Mama my tummy hurts.' me: 'What's the matter with it?' fin: 'I ate too much snow.' I love little kids!

The Countdown's On

Today was my 30 week appointment, which means 10 weeks to go! It seems like so far but I know that it will be here before I know it. So much to do and yes I've created my 'To Do' and 'What to pack in the hospital bag and diaper bag' lists. I've hit the nesting mode of wanting to put the nursery together, start washing clothes, buy bottles, put the car seat in the car, but not too worry, I'll wait another 5 weeks and then begin the nesting. The baby and I are healthy though and looking right on track for the first week in February. I won't lie, some days I wonder how in the world this little one can continue to grow and how my belly can possibly get any bigger!? Finley still seems excited to have a little sister around and loves rubbing and talking to my belly. She is such a sweet little girl and I know she'll be a big helper. I can't wait to have two fun little girls!

Future Cowgirl

Finley has been wanting to go for a mule ride for quite some time. This weekend the in laws went for a ride and before they left they let Fin ride bareback on Latigo. She loved it and was upset that she couldn't go on the big ride with the rest of them, she also asked why she didn't have cowboy boots like her aunt Micall. I guess we may need to invest in some. I love that she loves the outdoors and wants to be around the mules.

Better Late then Never

My dad's parents are from Germany and Poland, and last year when they went back to visit family they brought Finley this beautiful Polish dress. When I was Fin's age they had got me a German dress and so the tradition has continued on. She has waited months to be able to wear her 'pretty' dress and so I figured what a perfect time to wear it, Halloween. If you would ask her what she was, she would tell you a princess. I guess you could say she was a Polish Princess. I had to get some pictures taken to honor my grandparents. I love my little girl and can't believe how grown up she is getting.

Three Steve's

You have to understand that my dad is somewhat 'idealized' in his neighborhood by all the little kids because of his dump-trucks and tractors. Right now he is doing a remodel job on a house down his street and the two little boys in the picture live there. My dad is a big teddy bear when it comes to kids, so of course he loves it when they ask if they can help drive the tractors and dump-trucks with him. Sometimes there's a line of kids waiting for him to show to the job sight so they can hang out with him. Well as it turns out, when asked what these little boys wanted to be for Halloween, they said 'Worker Steve.' What? So their mom bought two miniature crutches, had custom sweatshirts made that have the Kodiak America logo on them, made fake casts, and sprayed their hair a blondish grey. I couldn't believe it when I was told about this, but then the picture came and I couldn't help but giggle! They really did want to be 'Worker Steve' (which he is known by all the little kids now). I've always looked up to my dad and love the fact that others do to. I couldn't help but share this with all of you.

Pumpkins

Finley was very excited to go pick out pumpkins this year. We found an old rancher who was selling pumpkins at his farm in Charleston so we decided to cruise over and get a few. It was such a cute little setup. The farmer had his tractor hooked up to two trailers that were full of all different size pumpkins. The hay separated the different sizes and there was only little signs beneath the to show the prices. I loved it, no one was there to take money but there was a toolbox nailed to the trailer were you put your money in. They were really good prices on big pumpkins.

Fin loved looking at all of them and chose all of them. I was sad that the weather turned nasty so we didn't stay long and didn't get quite as cute of pictures as I was hoping for. Fin has decided that we need to do this every year.

Belly Shot

Not that we as pregnant girls ever really feel cute in pictures with our bellies, I've had a demand from many friends that I needed to post a picture of my little belly. Well this is me at 24 weeks. The baby and I are healthy and still on track. And no I don't dress like this everyday, Brian and I were invited to go to the UVU Presidential Inaugural & Scholarship Ball with his parents. It was a black tie affair, and well somehow I was able to dig out this dress from the closet, throw on a pair of great shoes, curl my hair, and feel somewhat cute for the occasion. It was a great night of entertainment and food! I must say Thank You to Brian's grandma Beth for giving us the tickets.

Cyclecross

I know, you're thinking it's the middle of October and you're still posting pictures about cycling. Yep, it's never ending. Cyclecross is much more fun to watch, and it is only 50 minutes long. This was Brian's second ever race and besides getting thorns through his tires he did really well and had fun. It's amusing to watch them jump over logs and other obstacles while trying to clip in and out of their peddles. Apart from the fact it was really cold and Fin and I were hungry we had a great time. Next race is in our home town of Heber. Should be fun! Oh but I must admit that this race and a concert replaced the long weekend of 24 hours of Moab for us this year which I was very grateful for.

It's a Girl!

Well enough with all the stories of 'if you're really sick it's a boy,' 'if your leg hairs grow faster it's a boy,' 'depending on the heart rate it could be a boy or a girl.' I don't believe any of it any more! I wasn't sick with Finley, but much sicker with this one. My leg hairs are growing out of control with this one but not with Finley. The first heart rate on this baby was 151, today it was 130. Totally up in the air and I had no intuition. Well the baby didn't want to show us what it was for quite awhile during the ultrasound, but then she gave us a nice shot and it was very clear that it was a Girl. When the lady told us it was a girl I said 'oh crap!' She gave me this funny look and I had to explain that it wasn't that I was disappointed with a girl, it was just that we had no clue for girl names (once again). I'm very excited for Finley to have a little sister. I think they will be very cute and fun together. The baby and I are both healthy and on track. We will have our hands full and Brian is completely outnumbered now.

All Grown Up

I can't believe how big my girl is getting! We started our first day of preschool today. Fin's been excited for the last two weeks and couldn't wait to go. Of course we had to get her a backpack (I know she doesn't really need it but it makes her feel cool). We went to REI to find her a backpack and we let her choose her own bag and water bottle. I love she chose the green one, she must be my daughter. Plus I don't tote around a diaper bag anymore, she wants to bring it everywhere so we have snacks, a coloring book and pencils, water bottle and wipes. I love her to pieces and love that she wants to go to school. We go Tuesdays and Thursday's from 9-12, perfect amount of time for her and I. Lately she is into choosing what she wears. Yes, she picked out her outfit for the first day of school.

It will be good for her to have her own little routine and something to keep her feeling important as the baby comes.

The infamous first day of school picture

The pack may be a little big but I figure it will last through kindergarten

This is the coolest little kid pack I've seen. The brand is Deuter

24 Hours of Grand Targhee

Grand Targhee Resort hosted the annual 24 Hours of Targhee mountain bike race this past weekend, with solo and team riders lapping a 7.3 mile course (with an 800 ft elevation gain per lap!) from noon on Saturday through noon on Sunday. Goal? To do as many laps as possible in 24 hours. And stay awake . . .

We survived the weekend of 24 Hours of Grand Targhee. I must say that I'd be more than willing to return and help support this race. Not only did we have a hotel room to stay in, the weather wasn't bad, I didn't have sand stuck everywhere by the end, the scenery was beautiful, and the company was great. It was so nice have a full time mechanic on hand (he also doubled as a chef), and the expertise of K Day's dad to make sure the guys were staying on top of their game. It was a good thing we had an expert mechanic, because after the first lap Brian's crank bolt broke and we had to put a different crank set on his bike from an extra bike that was brought. I wouldn't have known where to start to fix that. The bikes had never been treated better, cleaned and tuned up after every lap.

The guys won the 4 man category by 5 laps and ended tying with a men's Pro Duo team for the most laps, 34! Once again I can't understand how they can ride their bikes for 24 hours, get practically no sleep, force food and water down, and still have a great time. I'll tell you what, with 6 guys around things were never dull. The jokes and stories kept us laughing when the hours were getting long. I'm not even going to get started on the 'funk' smell of the room, and how it was like being around Junior High boys at points. On Sunday morning the weather had turned cold and super windy. Of course most of the weekend I was in my thermals, ski socks, down coat and a hat as the guys pretty much only wore thin layers of spandex. I was proud of the guys for their determination and strength. It was also nice to have a few extra hands for support. Well done Kuhl / Scott team! Wait, what would a long weekend be without the never ending drive home (5 1/2 hours) and getting home to unload the bike and car coming to realize that one of the crank arms and peddle had come off the bike and are probably somewhere on the side of the road in Idaho. I think race season is over for us.
